The Karnataka government on September 29 approved Global Technology Centres (GTCs) in Belagavi and Hubballi, as part of its strategy to expand the state's technology sector beyond Bengaluru. State IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge announced the decision on Tuesday.
The initiative is part of Karnataka's broader “Beyond Bengaluru” technology strategy. Earlier state plans identified Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Kalaburagi as locations for Global Technology Centres intended to bring high-value technology opportunities closer to talent outside the state capital.
For Belagavi, the approval is significant because the proposed centre could strengthen the city's technology ecosystem, create opportunities for skilled professionals and help attract technology companies and investment to the region. The announcement concerns approval of the centre; it does not mean that a physical GTC facility is already operational.
The development follows the state's wider Local Economy Accelerator Programme and its push to build technology, innovation and employment ecosystems in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
